She is founder and owner of the Novato Institute for Somatic Research and Training, established in 1975 by Dr. Criswell Hanna and her husband, Thomas Hanna. She is the Creator of Equine Hanna Somatics and Canine Hanna Somatics. She is also professor of psychology, emeritus at the Sonoma State University.
Her life work focuses on somatics, yoga, embodiment, and ways to awaken human potential through somatic awareness, theory, practice and research. (from SomaTimes Magazine Dec. 2018)
The human-horse relationship is by nature somatic: It is the integration of two minds and two bodies, the mind and body of the rider and the mind and body of the horse... The result is a greater harmony between horse and rider, an interspecies relationship.

Alissa is the Co-Instructor of the EHS Professional Training Program, an International Clinician, Creator of A Somatic Approach to Horsemanship™ and the Founder/Director of the Association for Equine Hanna Somatics Education.
The sciences of Somatics (physiology + movement) Classical Dressage (progressive athletic development) and Natural Horsemanship (horse behavior) have informed and influenced the way Alissa teaches riding, handles and trains horses. Her sessions foster a logical and holistic approach to developing sound horses and happy humans, in a partnership based on mutual trust, safety, healthy posture and movement, clear communication and building the ultimate connection.
A Lifetime Student of the Horse, I am endlessly grateful to my most esteemed colleagues and furry professors – the horses in my life – from Marco the Mini, to Toby (the formerly “evil" pony), to the larger equines in my daily life: Jedi my appendix thoroughbred and Master of Sensitivity, and of course Doc A’Nalu, my warmblood/quarter horse cross who waited so patiently for me to learn to offer him a more sophisticated conversation. And all the rest! Keep ’em coming. Much Love!

If you build it, they will come... Kathy is steward to both land and horses at her natural boarding stable and mustang gentling facility, Windhorse Ranch. She is also a Charter Member of the Association for Equine Hanna Somatics Education.
Windhorse Ranch was envisioned as a place where humans and their horses are free to pursue their partnership with each other, unfettered by unnatural ways of keeping horses.
This includes a natural horsemanship approach to training, riding and starting horses, and of course offering Equine Hanna Somatics to the horses who reside at Windhorse.
